“Hard work beats natural talent when natural talent fails to work hard.”
Our Staff:
Jimmy Gravo
Jimmy Gravo began his coaching journey in 1984 at Del Oro High School in Northern California, where he became the school’s first pole vault coach with just three vaulters and two poles. After his first season, he took his athletes to a pole vault camp in San Luis Obispo led by legendary Olympian Jan Johnson, whose drills and coaching philosophy still influence him today.
Before coaching, Jimmy earned a scholarship to compete in football and track at University of Jamestown in the early 1980s. His passion for pole vaulting grew even more when his daughter began vaulting in 2013, and he officially joined CCSD coaching in 2016 at Corando High School. Since then, he has coached multiple regional, state, and national champions while building a program centered around hard work, confidence, and making the sport fun for athletes.
McKenzie Gravo
McKenzie Gravo began her athletic career in gymnastics during elementary school and advanced to Level 9 by her sophomore year through years of dedication and hard work. After an injury ended her gymnastics career, she found a new passion in pole vault and quickly applied her athletic background, discipline, and body awareness to the sport. Her determination earned her a scholarship to Concordia University, where she became a multiple GPAC Conference Champion and earned several All-American honors throughout her collegiate career.
With experience in both gymnastics and pole vault, McKenzie brings a highly technical coaching style focused on body mechanics, precise cues, and progressive drills. Her background allows her to break down movements in a way that helps athletes build confidence, consistency, and strong fundamentals while still keeping training positive and engaging.
